Something New from Nikki Yanofsky

MusicLoad.Com presents music video, Nikki Yanofsky, song is Something New

It's so refreshing to hear a real talent like Nikki Yanofsky with actual substance and no hype necessary.

In 2006, at age 12, she became the youngest artist to ever headline at the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

Having honed her craft in more of a jazz vein from a young age, she has developed real musical chops that give her the flexibility to cross over into multiple genres as she has grown up into a fine young lady who does not need to flaunt anything except her honestly amazing voice.

Presently, at age 19, she has been working with Quincy Jones making music with a classic flair. Enjoy!

Nneka - Lost Souls (Live in Philly)

MusicLoad.Com presents Nneka - Photo © MusicLoad.Com

To regular visitors to MusicLoad, Nneka needs no introduction. For those who do not know her, yet, she is a powerful quiet storm who will blow your mind if you can take the time to sit back and ponder her lyrics. One word can be used to describe her: "DEEP". One word can describe what her music has: "IT".

Most of her music has deep political undertones, but songs often start out with lyrics that may sound like trite love songs, before the depth of the political undertones take shape.  So, pay close attention!

This song in particular, Lost Souls from her album TO AND FRO, has a little of that for a moment and might even invoke listeners to ponder thoughts of how they themselves have grown older and changed... our inner light that can begin dimming toward darkness because of life's harsh realities.
When I look into your eyes, all I see is your lost soul...
You Use to Shine… in The Darkness… You were a star...
You… it was always you, you used to shine
Overnight, you shine no more…
In this world of darkness…. racism, prejudice, of guns and war.. you need to give love... In my world of selfishness, in my world of wickedness, in this world of guns of war… you need to give love… Please, Please…
Nneka is from Lagos, Nigeria. Most of her political angst is based in the political corruption in her own part of the world, but she is well aware of the global political scene and how imperialist powers have played a role in the corruption of even her own politicians in Lagos. Nneka is a voice that speaks truth to power everywhere, whether she names names or not. She once told me in a one on one meeting that she never names names. I love her music for it's substance and feel she shares the same activist spirit that was emitted from Bob Marley's soul and music. All of her music going to back in time to when she was getting started musically is worthy of a long dig through. It's as fresh and meaningful today as it was when it was all originally made.

Jac Stone - Trying To Be Sorry + Someone With You (Audio Streams)

When MusicLoad first wrote about the beautiful sounds of Jac Stone in 2008, she spelled her name with a capital C as JaC, but appears that it's just Jac Stone these days with a small c.

What has not changed is that Jac still has that "it" thing. She may remind many listeners of artists from years gone by such as Joni Mitchell, Lisa Loeb, Jewel, Natalie Merchant, Edie Brickell and Suzanne Vega. But Jac is all original, not trying to cop someone else's groove. She has one of those great believable story telling voices that makes minds wander. The kind where you get lost and need to replay the song again, only to get lost again.

Recently, she has been having a successful run on Australia's version of the TV program, The Voice. MusicLoad, and the network it is part of, keeps hoping that we will see her here in LA sometime.

Fela Kuti and the Egypt 80 Band

After featuring the music of Antibalas, the band whose sound that is so heavily influenced by the late great Fela Kuti, it seemed logical to finally follow up with some more Fela Kuti himself. This is a live concert film of Fela in 1984 at Glastonbury, the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world to this day. This concert film also includes a segment/interview of Fela that not part of the music performance, but in a room somewhere, wearing what he wore on stage. He speaks candidly about his activism, various other thoughts and about his life as far back as a child. A great snapshot of a very interesting dead music legend whose music and spirit is still very much alive and influencing living artists with similar activist bents and heavy grooves. A MusicLoad favorite artist named Nneka quickly comes to mind. If you like afro funk music, this film is worthy of turning off the phone, turning up the volume knob, sitting back and watching.

Antibalas - Live

This footage shot by El Fusil in Mexico, is the latest live concert footage of the Brooklyn Based Afrobeat/Funk/Jazz group known as Antibalas, a word which translates in Spanish to bulletproof.

Much of Antibalas' music is in the vein of the late great Fela Kuti. In fact in 2008-2009, Antibalas actually was the house band in the off-Broadway and then Broadway musical, Fela!, about the life of Fela Kuti, the Nigerian political & social activist and recording artist.

On it's own, Antibalas, which is on the Daptone Records imprint, has a powerful unique sound worthy of cranking up the volume knob and escaping the world of texting or any further reading here.

Remembering Frank Ruffino of China White

Frank Ruffino, the guitarist of the late 1970's early 80's punk band China White, just lost his battle with cancer.

The first time I saw China White was at a house party in Huntington Beach before I had a drivers license. It must have been 1977 or 1978. China White played the most intense hard core music I'd ever heard at that time. Later when I saw the band in various clubs, their intensity was increased. It was a quite memorable great time when punk music took us all by storm.

Uncle Sam Goddamn

Brother Ali is controversial to some people. I've heard people argue whether he was black, white or Albino. I always thought, "why care about that?". Pigeonholing people based upon color or race without focusing on the individuals ideas is ignorant

Ignorant is something Brother Ali is not and he is full of ideas to ponder He knows enough U.S. and world history to carry on coherent raps in a reality based sense that is not the candy coated version that is spoon fed to kids in school. He seems to be putting into words what should be obvious to American voters and children alike regarding the game that is being played against them by the powers that be. Wake up America!

Listen to Brother Ali lay it down with glaring reality. It's a public service announcement to not drink the Cool-Aid. His opening words to his classic song titled Uncle Sam Goddamn: "Welcome to the United Snakes, Home of the thief, Home of the slave..." is how he starts off the beginning of his portrayal of a flawed electorate and the related truths of U.S. Government Policy and raps down layers of tongue lashings at the government as well as the voter.

Check out other provocative songs with the word "Goddamn" in the title and one will find Brother Ali borrowed ideas for Uncle Sam Goddamn from Nina Simone. He even borrowed the line: "A show tune, but the show hasn't been written for it yet." Simone's song titled Mississippi Goddamn was written by her in 1964 as a protest song that was banned in several southern states.

Saucy Monky's latest thing.... the Living Room Sessions

Saucy Monky on MusicLoad
Saucy Monky is... (Left to Right) Drummer Megan Carchman, Annmarie Cullen, Bassist Steve Giles, Cynthia Catania)
From the first time I heard Saucy Monky around 2003, the group became one of my favorites. The now West Hollywood based garage pop group, which also spends much time in Ireland where they have a solid following, is fronted by two very beautiful singer/songwriter/guitarists: Annmarie Cullen and Cynthia Catania. They have seamlessly changed up an interestingly cool array of bassists and drummers in the last decade. Saucy Monky is one of those bands that makes a small packed venue feel exciting song after song where nobody wants the night to end.

Recently, the group began recording some scaled down live recordings from a living room with dim lighting and no amps which they call their "Living Room Sessions". It is a definite departure from their cranked up poppin' sound. The song below is a sweet one titled 4:47. It's laced with the same tasty lines, harmonies and use of dynamics the band is known for on their jacked up recordings and it's lovely. Enjoy!

This should be the theme song for those who want to lift the ludicrous federal ban on industrial hemp in the United States. But, a big thank you to Ziggy Marley for the effort and the song!

This is an amazing performance!  The rap of lyrical substance is stunningly syncopated to perfection.

Focus Songwriters: Pinheiro Da Silva, Nneka Lucia Egbuna, Farhad Samadzada
Lyrics: *Babatunde added some lyrics of his own which are missing below

Government politics, system policies,
Money, banks, foundation and discoveries
Mischievious and self centered development strategies,
Uneffective enough not to affect the physics and the spirits of mankind
In short and infact where do we go from here when we lack love in our hearts
When we lack an open heart and lie to ourselves and the one that truly loves, that we love
Truly we don't really give a fuck
Another day has passed my conscience is hunting me one small form
E to face this next temptation that is coming up now
The flesh has overcome the spirit, eyes opened but shot, sight blurred
Can't see the road because I am scarred of the lights
I gotta go on, I gotta move on, we gotta go on, we gotta move on
Cause if you don't search for the truth your soul will definitely remain undone

Chorus
Maintain your Focus
The misery is all around you
The misery, the envy
It is hard staying away from the temptations of the world
Maintain your mind, see

Is it the drugs? Is it the men? Is it the money? Is it the fame?
Do not need all this to find myself
Have met my shadow a thousand times
I know how it feels to be untrue to oneself
See would you hold back the things that urged you to speak your mind?
Living in the bondage, in if clauses for the rest of your life
You want to lie in systems custody, your soul strip for free
Living in the bondage, in if clauses for the rest of your life
You want to lie in system custody, your soul strip for free

Will you sell your soul for free?

Maintain your Focus
The misery is all around you
The jealousy, the envy
It is hard staying away from the temptations of the world
Maintain your mind

Maintain your Focus
The poverty is all around you
The misery and envy
It is hard staying away from the temptations of the world

Bridge
Temptations of this world
You see the demons coming out of you
They reveal themselves to you and yes you can see your truth

Oh no no, got to maintain your mind
In this world of pain
In this world of sin
In this world of hate

Maintain your Focus
The misery is all around you
The misery
It is hard staying away from the temptations of the world
Maintain your mind, see
