Syl Johnson - Is It Because I'm Black and Different Strokes (Audio)

MusicLoad presents Syl Johnson and the 1970 recording of his song titled Is It Because I'm Black.

Syl Johnson, who was born Sylvestor Thompson, was born July 1, 1936. He is very much still alive and still performs shows.

A documentary film titled SYL JOHNSON: ANY WAY THE WIND BLOWS was on the film festival circuit in beginning in 2015 and there are still planned screenings for the doc in 2018.

He is a legendary figure with a rich history worthy of researching and enjoying his musical legacy. For those unfamiliar with his name will soon realize that his music has been sampled and reused by numerous artists, producers, dj's and more, for several decades.

This soul classic featured below by Syl Johnson was a hit when the LP titled "Is It Because I'm Black" was released on Twinight Records in 1970.

Just below is the Syl Johnson recording of Different Strokes, which was released on Twilight Records in 1968, before the record company realized their name was in use already by another music company called Twilight. So, on future records, the company switched to calling the label Twinight Records.

Alex Nester is what "it" is...

As far back as I can remember, one of my missions in life was to know about young acts that are coming up, before the labels caught up with them.

I love that feeling of getting excited when I hear new organic talent I haven't heard before. I am talking about the excitement of hearing unmanufactured music from artists who have nurtured their sound, tapped into their own inner genius that we all have, but few of us ever tap. Someone who can sit down with with no backup and deliver the goods.

With all that said, this artist below named Alex Nester, is one of those real deal artists.

I stumbled upon her while walking down a bustling Main St. and heard her singing this song for a supper crowd. I had to go in. It turned out she was performing an original song, written and dedicated to her grandparents, that she had not yet recorded. But now she has.

Hope you all enjoy what this girl's brand of soul is all about.

Elle King - Love Stuff (Music Videos)

We recall featuring Elle King here on MusicLoad three years ago in March of 2012, by way of another artist we dig known as Epick, who we featured here in July 2008.

Just below are two videos that are connected to King's most recent album titled Love Stuff. She is a versatile artist who should not be pigeonholed, but she cruises well and nicely in the rockabilly mode of this first song and creative music video below.

Next are some shots and sounds of Elle in Memphis Tennessee where she records in the original Sun Studio that the legendary Sam Phillips made famous. Phillips is not only known for launching Elvis' career, he discovered Howlin' Wolf, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash. Just the tip of the iceberg inside the history of the little studio that screams Memphis is still alive with today's artists feeling the spirits of their predecessors as good use is still being squeezed out of the iconic space. In fact, there is an archive here of numerous artists recording there in recent years.

SHEL - Stained (Music Video)

MusicLoad.Com presents SHEL and their band Stained

Four fabulously talented sisters named Sarah (violin), Hannah (keyboards and squeezebox), Eva (Mandolin) and Liza (Drums) make up the group known as SHEL. They all write, arrange sing and play with exceptional skill with amazing vocal harmonies that are very real without special effects or auto tuning. Their studio recordings sound much like their un-lipsynced live performances, because these girls are not manufactured or polished by producers. In my opinion, the producers the band has worked with have done little more than press the record button, which is all the band needs. They are organic, pure and real.

The girls grew up in a music family. Their father towed them along to his own gigs when they were all young. They grew up listening to a very diverse selection of music. They have so many influences including rock bands such as Jethro Tull and in this song in particular, there is a little Led Zeppelin influence. Stained reminds me of Led Zep's song titled The Battle of Evermore, which SHEL separately did a nice cover of as well. Enjoy!

SHEL wrote this about their self produced/directed video: "On what felt like the coldest day of winter, we shot this video along the Harpeth River in Franklin, TN. We've been told this trail is part of the original Natchez Trace, which is why the road is worn far below the tree roots. This same area was a camp site during the The Battle of Franklin - the bloodiest battle of Civil War and it's near an ancient Native American village now called "Old Town" that dates back to the year 900...now that's some history!"

Something New from Nikki Yanofsky

MusicLoad.Com presents music video, Nikki Yanofsky, song is Something New

It's so refreshing to hear a real talent like Nikki Yanofsky with actual substance and no hype necessary.

In 2006, at age 12, she became the youngest artist to ever headline at the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

Having honed her craft in more of a jazz vein from a young age, she has developed real musical chops that give her the flexibility to cross over into multiple genres as she has grown up into a fine young lady who does not need to flaunt anything except her honestly amazing voice.

Presently, at age 19, she has been working with Quincy Jones making music with a classic flair. Enjoy!
