Mavis, with The Staple Singers or on her own, is one of my personal favorite artists ever. Shot this photo of Mavis performing at a live show that full of major funk augmented with high gospel.
Here is a classic Mavis Staples performance that may be unknown to many. A rare gem of music with deep meaning.
It seriously is hard to get any off any more than this. Right? This is as real as real gets in rock & roll. They were not behind the times one little bit in 1969 with regards to music, how put on and record & film great concerts. Wow! Stellar footage from a great moment in time that still exists when Carlos Santana plays. Catch him if you can!
Stumbled on this via the Facebook page of Paul McCartney's guitarist Brian Ray, where one of Brian's followers posted it on Brian's page. Michael Province, violinist aged 15 at the time of this recording, and Nathan Chan, cellist aged 16 at the time of this recording, jam out to the Beatles song Let It Be. This was filmed at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore.
The U.K. based soul/R&B duo known as "Lady" features vocalists Nicole Wray and Terri Walker
Loving the soulful duo out of the U.K. known as "Lady". First posted their song titled Get Ready on Music Television early last month and I immediately bought the song download. After playing it at least a thousand times or more, I still love it! Don't typically repost songs already on MusicTelevision.Com right here, but hope everyone loves the classic old school energy Nicole Wray and Terri Walker put into this. It grooves for days. Definitely, this is R&B music at it's finest.
KCRW radio's Jason Bentley just posted this track to his facebook and noted that one of it's co-creators, Scott Hardkiss, just passed away. RIP Scott.
Scott Hardkiss, who was born as Scott Friedel, was a 43 year old San Francisco DJ who in the 1990's played a significant role in the rave music scene. The track below was originally released in 1993.
*Gaby had this photo below posted to her Facebook page of Former UN Secretary General Kofi Attan holding a Kalashnikov assault rifle transformed into a Guitar. Gaby's words posted with the photo were: "My religion, you ask? MUSIC and LOVE"
Originally from Nneka's fantastically substantive album titled Concrete Jungle, the song in the live concert film featured below features Nneka performing her song titled Focus, in Europe with Nigerian rapper Babatunde. This is an amazing performance! The rap of lyrical substance is stunningly syncopated to perfection.
Nneka is one of the most inspired global artists of depth on the scene today. She stumps hard for the people of her native Nigeria, and always has truth, justice and love in her heart for all around the world, especially the less fortunate. Study her lyrics to this song below and know her other songs are equally as passionate and heavy if you have not yet heard.
Focus Songwriters: Pinheiro Da Silva, Nneka Lucia Egbuna, Farhad Samadzada
Lyrics: *Babatunde added some lyrics of his own which are missing below
Government politics, system policies,
Money, banks, foundation and discoveries
Mischievious and self centered development strategies,
Uneffective enough not to affect the physics and the spirits of mankind
In short and infact where do we go from here when we lack love in our hearts
When we lack an open heart and lie to ourselves and the one that truly loves, that we love
Truly we don't really give a fuck
Another day has passed my conscience is hunting me one small form
E to face this next temptation that is coming up now
The flesh has overcome the spirit, eyes opened but shot, sight blurred
Can't see the road because I am scarred of the lights
I gotta go on, I gotta move on, we gotta go on, we gotta move on
Cause if you don't search for the truth your soul will definitely remain undone
Chorus
Maintain your Focus
The misery is all around you
The misery, the envy
It is hard staying away from the temptations of the world
Maintain your mind, see
Is it the drugs? Is it the men? Is it the money? Is it the fame?
Do not need all this to find myself
Have met my shadow a thousand times
I know how it feels to be untrue to oneself
See would you hold back the things that urged you to speak your mind?
Living in the bondage, in if clauses for the rest of your life
You want to lie in systems custody, your soul strip for free
Living in the bondage, in if clauses for the rest of your life
You want to lie in system custody, your soul strip for free
Will you sell your soul for free?
Maintain your Focus
The misery is all around you
The jealousy, the envy
It is hard staying away from the temptations of the world
Maintain your mind
Maintain your Focus
The poverty is all around you
The misery and envy
It is hard staying away from the temptations of the world
Bridge
Temptations of this world
You see the demons coming out of you
They reveal themselves to you and yes you can see your truth
Oh no no, got to maintain your mind
In this world of pain
In this world of sin
In this world of hate
Maintain your Focus
The misery is all around you
The misery
It is hard staying away from the temptations of the world
Maintain your mind, see
Out of London, here is the latest from The Branco Heist. The band has a record titled Heads Will Roll set for release on March 25, 2013. The first track below is from that new release and the next two tracks are earlier releases. Enjoy!
Totally digging this song and video. Thanks to to Maddie Oatman and her piece on Mother Jones for the turn on. It's Yummy. Dug around and found there are many good live takes of the following song that are almost better than the official music video, because the artist can sing live. Hopefully RCA Records, who deserves good credit, will hang in there and work this artist until she grabs a deep hold in the marketplace.
Laura Mvula - Green Garden
another live take of Green Garden...
And one other live performance of a song titled Sing To The Moon (Live at Full Future Festival)
And one more conceptual music video to her song titled She
Allen Stone is one of the great live soul singers out there. He sings his ass off. This video was directed by David Cummings. Look out for Allen Stone's latest record being released March 25, 2013.
All of Gaby Moreno's songs are beautiful and special. But this became one of my most favorite songs by Gaby Moreno after I heard her explain to the non Spanish speaking people in her audience one night at Cafe Largo, what the song meant to her. The Spanish title, Ave que Emigra, means Bird That Migrates in English
Gaby is from Guatemala and migrated to America to continue to pursue her craft as a singer, songwriter and recording artist. The song sung in Spanish, and text in English just below, is especially beautiful when considering the story of her own life and that of others who have the dream. Enjoy!
I come from very far away
looking for the blue of the sky
following predicaments I come from very far away
Memories from my childhood that sometimes
leave the soul My Guatemala never forgot.
carried always with me
Tired from running
in times of hunting lifted high
in my flight like a bird that migrates
I come from very far away
looking for the blue of the sky
following predicaments I come from very far away
And how one is clinging to
a piece of land sooner or
later comes the air Burns without truce
Tired from running in
times of hunting lifted high
in my flight like a bird that migrates

Sweet recording of Janis Joplin laying down Me & Bobby McGee. It was apparently the first take, the first time she'd been in the studio to do this song. Raw and unedited, there is in studio conversation with Janis at beginning. Enjoy!

If you ever liked Jody Watley or Prince, you will like this. The artist known as Goapele has a song with that sexy "it" thing and you'll want to play it on repeat to set the stage for sexy romance. It is a club mix, designed for a sound system that moves a lot of air. It sounds great on most headphones, but many speakers won't be able to handle to the depth of the bass frequencies, but try to find that sweet spot on the volume knob/EQ and blast off anyway.
And, a song that Crosby Stills Nash performs on the road these days is one Graham Nash and James Raymond recently wrote in support of Government Whistleblower Bradley/Chelsea Manning. It's one of the most important songs during this time where U.S. led wars are being falsely disguised as benevolence.
Almost Gone (Ballad of Bradley Manning) by Graham Nash and James Raymond
Below is a scene from the French musical-documentary movie "Cuba Feliz", directed by Karim Dridi. It was first released in 2000, but is definitely worth watching if you have not seen it yet. The film follows a 76 year-old Cuban musician known as El Gallo as he travels throughout his country to play music with everyone he can. The doc captured the life of this senior troubadour, as he connects and bathes in Cuba's rich music culture.
February 6, 2013 - Bob Marley is 68 years old today and this is a great reason to enjoy a great show.
After two Bob Marley Santa Barbara Bowl shows in 1976 and 1978, in 1979 they filmed the November 25th event, that was the final time Bob played Santa Barbara.
Bob Marley's music and soul lives on towards peace, love and positive vibrations for all, around the world.
Timeless and powerful music worthy of turning up the volume knob, this Nneka song sounds and feels as fresh today as when it was released several years ago.
Nneka - Africans
At first listen, one may falsely assume these are drama laden love songs, when actually, they are pointed political diatribes. Nneka was heavy. Her music is full of substance. It sometimes take a few spins before fully understanding her lyrics.
Nneka - Heartbeat
This next track was released in 2011. The two songs above were from 2007-2008.
Nneka - Do You Love Me Now (on the street in Paris)
SHEL is a band made up of the four Holbrook sisters from Colorado: Sarah (Violin), Hannah (Piano), Eva (Mandolin) and Liza (Drums). SHEL just completed their latest music video.
SHEL - The Man Who Was The Circus
And below are two recent live TV appearances of SHEL that happen to be fantastic recordings. Turn it up!
Before her career took off, Sara Bareilles was a waitress at my favorite pub, back in a time when you had to have something special to work there. And that she did. But she maintained an understated humble way and she never mentioned to me she was an artist, when so many wannabes had and do, which made it even more refreshing when I eventually did learn about her talents. She not only plays a beautiful piano that is mean when she wants it to be, she sings her heart out to her own well written songs. Songs with that undeniable hit quality! Particularly love this minimalist take of her song titled Gravity, which is not the studio version from her hit record, but a stripped raw version with underproduced audio. It just feels great, like you are sitting in a little bar right across from her :)
Sorry, this video was once available. However, Prince and/or his companies are not allowing this video to be viewed online, at least at this time. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Recorded live and shot by a lone camera operator who shot the footage so well, no edits were necessary. Filmed in what looks like a living room of great old house, these are live takes worth playing again from the debut release of the group known as Black Dub. Black Dub features and old school sound with Trixie Whitley on Vocals and assorted instruments (even playing the drums at one point while singing her ass off), Daniel Lanois on songwriting/guitar/backing vocals, Daryl Johnson on bass and Brian Blade on drums. Sonic bliss from Lanois combined with the deep soul of Whitley with the perfect foundation from Johnson and Blade make for some artists who show their ability to not only make great studio recordings, but fantastic live recordings with little or no pomp & circumstance needed. Just real music all the way.
Black Dub - Nomad
Black Dub - Surely
Black Dub - I Believe in You
Black Dub - Ring The Alarm
Black Dub - Love Lives
And here is another early Black Dub recording, written by Trixie Whitley.

This is just Trixie from Ghent, Belgium and her electric guitar playing her her own kind of funk. Trixie is amazing with her full band studio records, but her raw stripped down versions of songs like this one are always a great treat. They give more of a peek into her songwriting genius. This was filmed on January 8, 2013 at Studio Brussel, a Dutch-speaking radio station in Brussels, Belgium.
Lianne La Havas is one of the greatest of the young greats. For those who cannot get enough, here is yet another take and scaled down version of Lianne's song "Is Your Love Big Enough". Just Lianne singing with her guitar and Joss Stone sitting next to her grooving out on the French TV show TARATATA. Lianne La Havas is an inspired artist with "it".
Below is the full studio version of the song and official music video :)
Heard about this artist from a very authentic & beautiful Latina girl from Los Angeles named Stephanie Rivera, who had some rare taste in music. Her dream it is to live in Guadalajara Mexico. Thanks Stephanie!
The artist, Manu Chao, is recording artist of French, Spanish and English heritage who has an unique groove and sound all his own. Stephanie told a story about Manu's father, who angered political forces in his native France, and was forced to flee France and Manu ended up in Spain. Manu Chao sings in multiple languages including but not limited to French, Galician, Spanish, Arabic, English, Italian and Portuguese. Manu Chao combines multiple genres of music and he should not be pigeonholed into any particular genre of music. A true original with that "it" thing.
