More from Shauna Brittenham

MusicLoad presents Shauna Brittenham

MusicLoad regulars may remember Shauna Brittenham from a few years back. If you've ever had the chance to see in her person, you know how absolutely stunning, kind and understatedly humble she is. She has that intangible elusive "it" quality that you know is special. The fact that she really is special and acts like she is not, shows what great acting potential she has if she ever chose to go down that road.

She just released a video shot live with her band, which is a mashup of two songs: The Black Keys song titled Fever and Sweet Dreams by The Eurythmics. If you get a chance to catch her live, do it!

Shauna Brittenham - The latest mashup

and just below is a music video release from 2010...

Nneka is one of the artists out on the international scene who has real deep roots of substance on humanitarian, political and other levels, right on up there with Bob Marley.  There is no jive turkeyism in this worthy artist's repertoire.

Steely Dan - Songs from Countdown to Ecstasy

MusicLoad presents Steely Dan and songs from Countdown to Ecstasy
Steely Dan album cover for Countdown to Ecstasy
In 1973 when the songs below came out and I was a 10 years old, I asked for this record for a birthday or Christmas. My great grandmother, who we actually called Granny, went to the store to buy it and changed her mind. She told my mother that the album cover contained pornography. When I heard that I wasn't getting that record and nobody would tell me what pornography was, I really wanted to have that record even more. I collected enough pop bottles to trade in to buy that record, and became addicted to this obscure form of pornography known as Steely Dan. These songs are are just two of my favorites from the record. In fact I love them all and as a kid I could scat every riff of every song, and still can. The entire record went a long way toward shaping my love for music.

Steely Dan - Bodhisattva

Steely Dan - Your Gold Teeth

The personnel on the entire album consisted of the following musicians: Walter Becker (vocals, guitar, harmonica, bass guitar); Donald Fagen (vocals, piano, electric piano, keyboards, synthesizer, percussion); David Palmer (vocals, keyboards, background vocals); Jim Hodder (vocals, drums, percussion); Sherlie Matthews, Patricia Hall, Royce Jones, Michael Fennelly, James Rolleston, Myrna Matthews (vocals, background vocals); Ben Benay (guitar, acoustic guitar); Rick Derringer (guitar, slide guitar); Jeff Baxter (guitar, steel guitar); Denny Diaz, Denny Dias (guitar); Ernie Watts, John Rotella, Lanny Morgan, Bill Perkins (saxophone); Victor Feldman (keyboards, vibraphone, marimba, percussion); David Palmer , Sherlie Mathews, Pam Hall (background vocals).

This song/video below is the original, uncut, full version of Chicken In The Corn that gained notoriety in the the Jamaican music film titled RiseUp. Enjoy!

SHEL - Stained (Music Video)

MusicLoad.Com presents SHEL and their band Stained

Four fabulously talented sisters named Sarah (violin), Hannah (keyboards and squeezebox), Eva (Mandolin) and Liza (Drums) make up the group known as SHEL. They all write, arrange sing and play with exceptional skill with amazing vocal harmonies that are very real without special effects or auto tuning. Their studio recordings sound much like their un-lipsynced live performances, because these girls are not manufactured or polished by producers. In my opinion, the producers the band has worked with have done little more than press the record button, which is all the band needs. They are organic, pure and real.

The girls grew up in a music family. Their father towed them along to his own gigs when they were all young. They grew up listening to a very diverse selection of music. They have so many influences including rock bands such as Jethro Tull and in this song in particular, there is a little Led Zeppelin influence. Stained reminds me of Led Zep's song titled The Battle of Evermore, which SHEL separately did a nice cover of as well. Enjoy!

SHEL wrote this about their self produced/directed video: "On what felt like the coldest day of winter, we shot this video along the Harpeth River in Franklin, TN. We've been told this trail is part of the original Natchez Trace, which is why the road is worn far below the tree roots. This same area was a camp site during the The Battle of Franklin - the bloodiest battle of Civil War and it's near an ancient Native American village now called "Old Town" that dates back to the year 900...now that's some history!"

David Crosby to release "Croz"

MusicLoad.Com presents David Crosby "Croz"

MusicLoad is generally focused on the great unknown artists, bands and songwriters who are way to far under the radar. But every once in a while there is a great established artist or group that I feel compelled to give a plug to. The legendary David Crosby is one such artist who deserves a big round of applause because he is always willing to use his status and power to say something and speak truth to power. He is outspoken politically and is always willing to get up and take what might at first be an unpopular stand. For that reason alone, David Crosby will always be welcome here.

David Crosby will release "Croz," his first solo album of studio material in 20 years, on January 28. Pre-Order your Copy Today.

Something New from Nikki Yanofsky

MusicLoad.Com presents music video, Nikki Yanofsky, song is Something New

It's so refreshing to hear a real talent like Nikki Yanofsky with actual substance and no hype necessary.

In 2006, at age 12, she became the youngest artist to ever headline at the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

Having honed her craft in more of a jazz vein from a young age, she has developed real musical chops that give her the flexibility to cross over into multiple genres as she has grown up into a fine young lady who does not need to flaunt anything except her honestly amazing voice.

Presently, at age 19, she has been working with Quincy Jones making music with a classic flair. Enjoy!

Nneka - Lost Souls (Live in Philly)

MusicLoad.Com presents Nneka - Photo © MusicLoad.Com

To regular visitors to MusicLoad, Nneka needs no introduction. For those who do not know her, yet, she is a powerful quiet storm who will blow your mind if you can take the time to sit back and ponder her lyrics. One word can be used to describe her: "DEEP". One word can describe what her music has: "IT".

Most of her music has deep political undertones, but songs often start out with lyrics that may sound like trite love songs, before the depth of the political undertones take shape.  So, pay close attention!

This song in particular, Lost Souls from her album TO AND FRO, has a little of that for a moment and might even invoke listeners to ponder thoughts of how they themselves have grown older and changed... our inner light that can begin dimming toward darkness because of life's harsh realities.
When I look into your eyes, all I see is your lost soul...
You Use to Shine… in The Darkness… You were a star...
You… it was always you, you used to shine
Overnight, you shine no more…
In this world of darkness…. racism, prejudice, of guns and war.. you need to give love... In my world of selfishness, in my world of wickedness, in this world of guns of war… you need to give love… Please, Please…
Nneka is from Lagos, Nigeria. Most of her political angst is based in the political corruption in her own part of the world, but she is well aware of the global political scene and how imperialist powers have played a role in the corruption of even her own politicians in Lagos. Nneka is a voice that speaks truth to power everywhere, whether she names names or not. She once told me in a one on one meeting that she never names names. I love her music for it's substance and feel she shares the same activist spirit that was emitted from Bob Marley's soul and music. All of her music going to back in time to when she was getting started musically is worthy of a long dig through. It's as fresh and meaningful today as it was when it was all originally made.

More from the great Bettye LaVette

MusicLoad presents Bettye LaVette - Joy

One of the baddest soul funk R&B artists the planet has ever seen or heard, Bettye LaVette has that "it" thing that will rock your world. Never contrived or jive, she is always believable and authentic.

This particular live performance of Bettye, featured below, happens to be a cover of a Lucinda Williams song titled Joy which Lucinda wrote for her own 1998 album titled Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. In 2005 Bettye LaVette recorded Joy for her own album titled I've Got My Own Hell To Raise. This particular live performance is solid, just like everything Bettye sings. Enjoy!

Jac Stone - Trying To Be Sorry + Someone With You (Audio Streams)

When MusicLoad first wrote about the beautiful sounds of Jac Stone in 2008, she spelled her name with a capital C as JaC, but appears that it's just Jac Stone these days with a small c.

What has not changed is that Jac still has that "it" thing. She may remind many listeners of artists from years gone by such as Joni Mitchell, Lisa Loeb, Jewel, Natalie Merchant, Edie Brickell and Suzanne Vega. But Jac is all original, not trying to cop someone else's groove. She has one of those great believable story telling voices that makes minds wander. The kind where you get lost and need to replay the song again, only to get lost again.

Recently, she has been having a successful run on Australia's version of the TV program, The Voice. MusicLoad, and the network it is part of, keeps hoping that we will see her here in LA sometime.

Fela Kuti and the Egypt 80 Band

After featuring the music of Antibalas, the band whose sound that is so heavily influenced by the late great Fela Kuti, it seemed logical to finally follow up with some more Fela Kuti himself. This is a live concert film of Fela in 1984 at Glastonbury, the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world to this day. This concert film also includes a segment/interview of Fela that not part of the music performance, but in a room somewhere, wearing what he wore on stage. He speaks candidly about his activism, various other thoughts and about his life as far back as a child. A great snapshot of a very interesting dead music legend whose music and spirit is still very much alive and influencing living artists with similar activist bents and heavy grooves. A MusicLoad favorite artist named Nneka quickly comes to mind. If you like afro funk music, this film is worthy of turning off the phone, turning up the volume knob, sitting back and watching.

Antibalas - Live

This footage shot by El Fusil in Mexico, is the latest live concert footage of the Brooklyn Based Afrobeat/Funk/Jazz group known as Antibalas, a word which translates in Spanish to bulletproof.

Much of Antibalas' music is in the vein of the late great Fela Kuti. In fact in 2008-2009, Antibalas actually was the house band in the off-Broadway and then Broadway musical, Fela!, about the life of Fela Kuti, the Nigerian political & social activist and recording artist.

On it's own, Antibalas, which is on the Daptone Records imprint, has a powerful unique sound worthy of cranking up the volume knob and escaping the world of texting or any further reading here.

Remembering Frank Ruffino of China White

Frank Ruffino, the guitarist of the late 1970's early 80's punk band China White, just lost his battle with cancer.

The first time I saw China White was at a house party in Huntington Beach before I had a drivers license. It must have been 1977 or 1978. China White played the most intense hard core music I'd ever heard at that time. Later when I saw the band in various clubs, their intensity was increased. It was a quite memorable great time when punk music took us all by storm.

China White - Danger Zone

China White - Addiction
