My friend Mike Finnigan, the legendary Hammond B3 player and super soul/blues/gospel vocalist, posted to FB that Bonnie Raitt is back in action. They just performed on Ellen yesterday and Bonnie and the band sound as fantastic as ever.

And... BTW.... Speaking of Mike Finnigan, never ever get tired of hearing this recording that Mike made decades ago. The song is Hard Times, which was written by Ray Charles. It sure has a place in the right here, right now, for so many impoverished people in the world who are down on their luck. This is another song to just close your eyes to, however, the subtitled story at the end is a nice story about how Ray Charles reacted to hearing Mike cover Ray's song. Apparently, Ray Charles thought Mike Finnigan had put more heart and soul into playing and singing Hard Times than Ray himself had put into it. That says a lot right there.

and just found this great rare unreleased recording of Mike singing one of the greatest classics from the heart of the civil rights movement in the United States, if not one of the greatest classics of all time. Mike once told me, in a Facebook thread, about how he was playing with black artists during that era when this song was written. He spoke of the hatred that some had... the racism. Mike feels this music, for he was there. It's not just a pretty song.

SHEL, a band of four sisters named Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza, is one of my absolute favorite rising bands out there. Happy to report that Gaby Moreno (featured on MusicLoad.Com dozens of times since 2006) just signed a record contract with the independent label of Guatemalan recording artist Ricardo Arjona. The label is known as Metamorfosis. Ricardo Arjona is one of Latin America's top selling acts and he broke from the major labels to pave his own international path.
Gaby became one of my most favorite indie artists out there, since the moment I noticed her in 2006. Have come to admire her greatly since then. She has the right attitude in how she has worked to get her music out there, play lots of shows... she has a consistent vibe, very relaxed, kind and sweet. She has integrity. Always making something, working on new songs, playing with new people, traveling to far away places to perform and tour.
Have always thought she was destined for superstardom on this path she is on, but superstardom isn't her trip. She lives in the moment like few others. She is a lover of blues/jazz/rock music and maintains a tranquility style life with a solid work to live rather than a live to work ethic. Such observations are not always what they appear to be, but that's the feeling I get from Gaby Moreno. Her Peace of Mind radiates. That's the most important thing one can have, in my humble opinion. That's why I think Gaby Moreno is destined for so much more success than she has already achieved in creating a self-sustaining working band and music career as a recording artist, songwriter other artists, with several film & TV on the music side, collaborator with many and touring artist. "Whole Lotta Helter Skelter"
This pretty darned cool mashup below is via guitar guru Brian Ray, well known as Paul McCartney's guitarist. Brian posted this clip below to his Facebook page this morning (March 28, 2012). Brian wrote: "BEST mashup track I've ever heard! "Whole Lotta Helter Skelter".. [And I don't even like mashups]".
The mashup was put together by a guy out of North Wales who goes by the moniker "soundhog" who writes he is in "musical composition, reappropriation and reproduction." I like how he uses the word "reappropriation" to describe his craft. Always thinking of Henry Rollin's rant about DJ's when listening to DJ's and mashups. With so many DJ's and mix masters who often sound the same vying for star status, it's cool to hear a DJ use "reappropriation" to describe their work. Kudos to Soundhog!

Fly My Pretties
Back in January 2012, I first consciously heard the music of Fly My Pretties and featured several earlier live music video performances from this fantastic musical collaboration of musicians from Wellington, New Zealand that only records live albums, in various locations around New Zealand. The different musical backgrounds of the members make for an eclectic mix of songs on their releases. Fly My Pretties was the brainchild of Barnaby Weir, front man of the Black Seeds and Mikee Tucker of Loop Recordings.
The latest Fly My Pretties IV CD/DVD set came out March 19, 2012. The 16 new songs on this 4th CD and DVD effort represent the best takes from the collective's November 2011 tour. These new songs were performed, filmed and recorded live across nine sold out shows. The tour also marked the collective's first international gig, playing an impressive sell out Melbourne date.
Via a unique collaboration, renowned visual/street artist Flox found inspiration in each song to create 16 original and dedicated pieces of art. A unifying thread throughout the show, the artworks were brought to life through projection, animation and visual trickery. Following the tour, these visuals were expertly mixed with the live video footage to create a seamless visual representation of the performances on DVD.

Later after Bootsy spoke with Bobby, Bootsy posted again and wrote: "I JUST SPOKE TO OUR FRIEND BOBBY WOMACK. He Wanted You All to Know That He Loves You & Thxs for the Prayers. Docs Says He Is In 1st Stage of Colon Cancer, He is Very Up Beat About His Future, we laughed & joked before we hung up. Thxs Funkateers, we will get him Back on the One! — with Michael Howard."
Bobby has has a new album coming out in June 2012 to be titled The Bravest Man in the Universe. A sound snippets is available on his website.

As a kid who grew up in the early 1970's, I learned to LOVE real Rock & Roll. Ronnie Montrose and his band known as Montrose, was one of those real rocking bands that those who were there will never forget. Back in the late 80's, I worked with a super great rock band known as the Apostles. I booked and promoted some important shows and was their manager, briefly. Years later, three members of the Apostles went on to form Train. My friend Jimmy Stafford who is still Train's lead guitarist just posted on Facebook that their latest song "Drive By" is #1 on the radio in Lebanon and in the top 10 in China, India, and Indonesia. Kudos to Train.

Came across Zana.M from a old friend, Gavin Christopher. Gavin is one of those gifted cats who is one of the most serious soul singers you'll ever see live. He is also a great songwriter whose reputation goes back to the days of writing and co-writing songs for great groups like Rufus & Chaka Khan. I got to know Gavin when I shot the China Club Pro Jams back in the 1990's and he was lead vocalist in the group, Jack Mack and the Heart Attack. Gavin never stops working and writing. Here is one of his current collaborations with ZANA.M of Tokyo.

Billy Preston
Billy Preston wrote this song with two other writers, and he was the first to record it and release it, just before Joe Cocker covered and released it slightly later in the same year and was credited for making the song famous. This recording by Billy Preston is such a beautiful heartfelt authentic recording. It was the 6th track on Billy's 11th record, The Kids & I, released in 1974.
It was such a cool thing to film Billy Preston live, performing at the China Club pro jams in the 1990's, where I was the exclusive videographer. I have some dope ass footage. The dude was full of rare energy that always brought the room to higher life. Will post at some point. Stay tuned.

Came across indie music video producer Elliot Glass on YouTube a while back and immediately loved his films of LA indie bands shot in what seems to be various living rooms. When I was a 10 years old, I asked for this record for a birthday or Christmas and my great grandmother went to the store to buy it and changed her mind. She told my mother that the album cover contained pornography. When I heard that I wasn't getting that record and nobody would tell me what pornography was, I really wanted to have that record even more. I collected enough pop bottles to trade in to buy that record, and became addicted to this obscure form of pornography known as Steely Dan. This song is just one of my favorites on the record. In fact I love them all and could scat every riff, as a kid, and still can. This record went a long way toward shaping my love for music. gc
